James P. Claxton

We announce with deep sorrow the passing of James P. Claxton, passed away on January 21, 2024 in Santa Rosa CA. Born on February 3, 1940, in Dekalb, Illinois, to Mary Elizabeth Freeman and Phillip Maurice Claxton, Jim was the eldest of three children, including his late sister Janice Arwood and surviving sister Joann Hackbarth. Jim's journey through life was marked by dedication, service, and a love for adventure. He married his beloved wife of 49 years, Evelyn Elizabeth Ginnetti, on February 17, 1975. James was a wonderful father to his children Michael Claxton, Todd Claxton, Donna Fraley, the late Jerry Claxton, Brian Chester, Daniel Chester, Holly Chester, Kevin Claxton, and Matthew Claxton. His legacy extends to 22 grandchildren and 26 great-grandchildren, who will miss his wisdom and warmth. Growing up on a farm in Illinois, Jim developed a love for sports, excelling in baseball and basketball. After graduating, he honored his nation by serving in the United States Air Force for 20 years. He began his military career as a Technical Instructor before transitioning into Accounting and Finances. Demonstrating exceptional leadership, Jim later managed the Enlisted Club and the Officer’s Club, earning accolades for his ability to transform operations. His service took him across the globe, including stints in Alaska, Greenland, Korea, Germany, Texas, Illinois, and California. Upon retiring from the military, Jim continued his passion for the hospitality industry, managing full-service country clubs in various states which included Enid, OK; Springfield, MO; Fort Smith, Batesville, and Pine Bluff, AR; Duluth, MN; Rochelle and Princeton, IL; and Troy, OH. His expertise in the field was unmatched, and he left a lasting impact on every institution he led. Jim's second retirement marked a new chapter in Ohio as he and his wife, Lynn, embarked on a journey across America in their RV. They lived by a simple yet profound rule: "If the weather isn't to our liking, we pack up and drive to nicer weather." This adventurous spirit led them to manage RV parks during their travels, eventually settling in Yuma, AZ, as permanent park managers. An avid fisherman, skilled woodworker, enthusiastic bowler, and adept at small engine repair, Jim had a wide array of hobbies that reflected his diverse interests and talents. Jim Claxton will be remembered as a devoted family man, a proud veteran, and a respected leader in his community. His life was a journey well-traveled, filled with love, service, and adventure. He will be deeply missed but forever cherished in our hearts. A memorial service with full Military Honors will be held January 31, 2024, 4PM at the Windsor Healdsburg Mortuary Chapel, 9660 Old Redwood Hwy. Windsor, CA.
